Mean Girls

The focus of this one-day seminar was to provide educators gender-specific strategies, activities and insights that can be used to confront and avoid relational aggression and bullying. These interventions can be used to revive, launch or sustain efforts to prevent emotional violence among girls. Without help, girls who are targets often suffer lasting effects – including academic withdrawal, social withdrawal, depression, substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, delinquency, crime, dysfunctional relationships, self-injury and even suicide. Unfortunately the target herself all too often becomes a bully.

Middle Grades Math Teachers

Middle grades hands on, minds on math activities.  This workshop was designed to give teachers real life, applicable and fun activities with a focus on data collection and analysis to use with grades 6-8.  Teachers discovered new ways to teach their students involving all the mathematical practices that will enhance their math knowledge while providing them with an in-depth understanding of the "why" behind the math.

Making Math Accessible for All

This one day workshop  provided strategies and interventions that teachers may use to assist students with learning difficulties in the area of mathematics.  Ideas for building fact fluency, solving basic computation problems with all four operations, and solving word problems were provided and modeled.

Lost Boys Seminar (Please note: the title of this workshop last summer was BOYDOM).

This informative seminar explored the behaviors of boys. Boys are held back in school twice as often as girls. Boys also get expelled from preschool nearly five times more often than girls, and they are diagnosed with learning disorders and attention problems at nearly four times the rate of girls. Boys are more likely to drop out of school, and make up only 43 percent of college students. Millions of boys are being lost along the path to academic success and career achievement in today’s knowledge economy. Teacher bias regarding behavior, rather than academic performance, penalizes boys as early as kindergarten. On average, boys receive lower behavioral assessment scores, and those scores affect teachers' overall perceptions of boys' intelligence and achievement.

Mono Printing on Gel Press/Gelli Plates
Presenter: Callie Lewis, Westwood Elementary, Ashe County Schools

The presenter challenged participants with this question: "How long has it been since you, as an adult, have taken the time to learn a new medium while allowing yourself the freedom to “play?” Now is your time. This workshop  introduced participants to Gel Printing Plates. Gel Printing Plates look and feel like gelatin, but are durable, reusable and store at room temperature. They are easy to clean and always ready for printing. Monoprinting on a Gelli or Gel Press plate is simple and exciting for all grade levels, even adults! Teachers explored an array of techniques and paints/inks that can be used with Gel Printing Plates and had ample “play” time to experiment and make their own prints. This workshop was requested by art teachers in the Northwest region. Materials were provided for use in the workshop.

Garden Treasures
Presenter: Susan Edmonson, Fiber Arts Artist and Instructor

Susan’s newest creation was unveiled in this fun workshop and was designed to encourage participants to see nature in a new way!  The instructor focused on paying attention to details in nature, noting they are there for us to all enjoy.  This project was designed as a flag or garland.  Each little flag piece measured only about 4 1/2” x 6 1/2” in size, but could be slightly different if participants chose. Keeping the project small made their efforts more fun & easier to finish.  Participants were encouraged to incorporate as many techniques as desired for each little piece of art.  They learned many embroidery and embellishing techniques from this class. Also learned were ways to make the most of the flowers from different types of Yo-Yo’s.   No experience was necessary, except the knowledge of threading a needle! Kits were provided and particpants learned many techniques of creative expression using fabric and thread media.

Wired Differently

Studies show that approximately 20 percent of all students are diagnosable for a mental, emotional or behavioral health issue. This seminar was designed to aid counselors, teachers and other professionals with understanding of how to support and teach this high-potential portion of the student population while avoiding an unmanageable classroom environment. In a single classroom, it is quite conceivable that a teacher might be dealing with 4 or 5 different disorders. Some of the most common challenges mainstreamed in the classroom tend to be: Anger Disorders Bipolar Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Oppositional Defiant Disorder Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ADHD Anxiety Disorder Asperger's Syndrome Borderline Personality Disorder Reactive Attachment Disorder These issues are often undiagnosed and easily misunderstood - and may be responded to as simple discipline issues. Behaviors that tend to be common to students who are wired differently include: Disorganization Perfectionism Trouble dealing with change Performance and testing anxiety Social Anxiety Over- and under-reacting to adults and peers. The goal of this seminar was to provide participants with key insights and approaches to help them prevent disruptions and distractions, while maximizing the abilities of students with these unique challenges.

The Writing Workshop the "Write" Way for Grades K-3 & 4-6

This workshop provided participants with strategies to prepare for writing instruction and integrate writing across the content areas into everyday instruction.  The NC ELA Writing Standards was revisited along with resources for providing effective writing instruction.  Each participant  walked away with a toolkit of ideas and activities to start off the new school year "write"!

Dr. David Stegall Named Northwest Superintendent of the Year

2017-18 Northwest Superintendent of the Year

Newton, NC -- May 10, 2017 -- In a unanimous vote of the Northwest Superintendent’s Council, Dr. David Stegall, Superintendent of the Newton-Conover City School district in Newton, North Carolina, has been named the Northwest Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance.
 

The Superintendent’s Council of the NWRESA is comprised of more than a dozen superintendents from across the Northwest region of the state, in addition to Joe Sinclair, former Superintendent and the NWRESA’s current Executive Director.  Dr. Stegall’s honor as one of the top eight superintendents statewide places him in the running for State Superintendent of the Year.


Dr. Stegall has left no opportunity for innovation and forward-thinking growth unturned since July of 2013, when his tenure in Newton-Conover City Schools began.  During his service as Superintendent, Newton-Conover Schools achieved the highest graduation rate in the history of North Carolina in 2015, at 97.1%.

 

The district has also created magnet programs at multiple schools in recent years, including The Leader in Me, Blended Learning, Dual Language and Global Immersion, Project-Based Learning, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). 


Most recently, in 2016, Dr. Stegall was named a national "Superintendent to Watch" by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), and N-CCS was named a National District of Distinction by District Administrator Magazine.
 
 

Dr. Stegall joined the Newton-Conover City School system from Iredell-Statesville Schools in July 2007, as the Director of Elementary Curriculum, ESL, and AIG. Since then, he has presented at the state, national and international levels on professional learning communities and teacher empowerment.
 
 

Dr. Stegall received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; a master's degree in education from Gardner-Webb University; an education specialist degree in education administration from Appalachian State University; and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from ASU. 
 

If selected for the honor of State Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Stegall would serve as a sitting advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education, in addition to running as a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year.

Canvas Level 1 and 2

Sarah Cardwell, Digital Teaching & Learning Division (Educator On Loan), NC Department of Public Instruction, taught two sessions: Canvas Level 1 (Introduction) provided an overview of Canvas,  different features, and how to begin building a course. Canvas Level 2 (Making Canvas Sing) allowed participants who know the basics of Canvas to maximize the features to enhance their classroom. Some of these features in Canvas can create a digital community in the classroom.

Changes in Math I, II, III
July 26, 27, 28, 2016

 

Dr. Debbie Crocker, ASU, member of the High School Standards Revisions Writing Group, discussed and provided examples of the significant changes to be implemented in the Fall of 2016 for Math I, II and III. Teachers were given updates in order to prepare them to deliver this information to other teachers in their district. Dr. Crocker gave examples of the changes. For example: N-Q.1, N-Q.2, and N-Q.3 will be completely integrated into the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The team has worked to ensure that Math I builds on middle grades math, Math II builds on Math I, and Math III builds on Math II still utilizing an integrated approach. These sessions were held in July 2016 due to awaiting final review and vote by the State Board of Education (passed in June).

Wilkesboro, NC - Burke County Schools superintendent Larry Putnam has been named the 2016-17 Northwest Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Northwest RESA Superintendent's Council. The Alliance is comprised of 13 superintendents from public school districts across the Northwest portion of the state.

Mr. Putnam will now compete for the NC Superintendent of the Year, the highest honor bestowed on a North Carolina superintendent. The North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Boards Association have partnered since 2005 to award this distinguished honor to a public school superintendent. The winner of this prestigious award competes for the title of National Superintendent of the Year and serves as an advisor to the State Board of Education.

End of June 2016 Busy with Staff Development Sessions

Educators from across the Region 7 area enjoyed a variety of professional development sessions to kick off the beginning of the new school year. Teachers were able to earn literacy, art, technology, and general credits for their attendance and participation. The Google Educator Level 1 - Certification Boot Camp - Donna Teuber, Presenter, allowed participants to become knowledgeable about the Google Apps for Education in order to be certified as a Google trainer. Behavioral health and substance use issues among the student population was provided by LPCs to school counselors, teachers and administrators. Multiple sessions in the new Canvas LMS were offered to teachers and principals to familiarize themselves with the overwhelming functionality of the tool prior to the beginning of the new school term.

Using Signposts to Guide Students’ Journey Through Complex Texts

Dr. Lora Drum, Elementary Curriculum Specialist for Catawba County Schools, presented to teachers in grades 3-6 on ways to explore specific fiction and nonfiction signposts, stances and strategies. Teachers examined ways to encourage students to develop their own text-dependent questions that deepen reading comprehension.. The close reading stances and strategies were designed to help students stay engaged in the text and build reading stamina.  Participants exampled text excerpts and practice identifying the reading signposts (developed by Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst) in order to teach their students.  Teachers earned 0.5 Reading/ELA credits.

"Really Making It Honors!"

October 3, 4, December 1, 2016 - Michelle McLaughlin, Social Studies Consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction presented this 3-day workshop entitled "Really Making It Honors". Ms. McLaughlin asked High School Social Studies Educators, "Are your honors level social studies courses really and different from standard level courses? Are they designed to provide greater depth and complexity? Do the content, pace, and academic rigor put high expectations on the learner while surpassing the standards of the SCOS? This workshop helped participants 1) concentrate on how to extend the curriculum and content beyond the SCOS, 2) determine how to design social studies honors courses that are truly differentiated at an academic level for the advanced learner, and 3) make decisions about instructional methods and practices that support high student achievement and academic growth. This session’s hands-on, work session approach also helped participants begin to prepare honors level courses centered on research-based, teacher planning and practice that Really Make It Honors!

K-12 ELA Educators were asked to consider the following questions: How can we ensure that the assessments we create are aligned to the instruction we provide? What role can effective questioning have in supporting this alignment? This professional development took participants through a process to begin thinking about the questions asked during instruction, learn ways to support students in asking questions, and discover ways to generate strong test questions that truly measure student mastery.

ASW: Technology for Special Content Areas
 October 11, 2016

Presenters: Sarah Caldwell and Nathan Craver

Participants discovered new digital tools to help their students demonstrate learning. The use of technology is intended to help document how students have grown in their knowledge. Participants will collaborated with others in their field and with their district. Participants were given to opportunity to rotate through various tech stations, collaborate in job a-like setting (working with teachers in their specific content area), and participate and reflect on district Team Building/planning specific to their district plan.

Each district was asked to bring a team of seven. Suggested participants were:
• Central office ASW coordinator (required)
• Visual Arts teacher
• Music teacher
• Foreign language teacher
• AP teacher
• PE teacher
• IB teacher

Participants were asked to be willingly share what they had learned with others in their district.
 

Rules that Expire, Nix the Tricks, and Teaching Number Sense
for Understanding and Retention

October 12, 2016

Dee Hanlin, NWRESA Math Consultant says that the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) tells us to beware of rules that expire; others say “Nix the Tricks", Common Core says teach for understanding. Wouldn’t it make sense to students to divide when it says divide, rather than multiply when we are dividing fractions? Participants of this workshop examined KFC, Cross Multiply/Butterfly math, PEMDAS, two negatives make a positive, etc. and how to replace these tricks with teaching for understanding and retention.

Strengthening Instruction in Early Grades Literacy in Grades K-2 and 3-5

October 25-28, 2016 - Amy Jo Spencer, Senior Literacy Specialist for NCCAT, presented Strengthening Instruction in Early Grades Literacy for grades K-2 and 3-5. Ms. Spencer believes that in order for students to become globally competitive, it is imperative they receive a good foundation in literacy instruction. With new challenges facing teachers each day, this task can be daunting. Participants examined key aspects of the Read to Achieve legislation to ensure alignment in the classroom and school with research-based strategies and best practices. Educators also learned how to “fit it all in” by integrating literacy across the curriculum; how to effectively maintain a progress monitoring assessment schedule; how to use data to develop engaging lessons that foster a love for reading while still teaching foundational skills; and, how to develop a literacy environment that is welcoming and inviting to students of all developmental levels. Everyone had the opportunity to plan and design some activities to implement in their literacy block. Teachers were asked to bring a few favorite read aloud books, any curricular materials to make the time fruitful, and a laptop or iPad for technology use in the instructional session. 

   

November 11, 2016 - Art, ELA, and other interested teachers enjoyed Integrating Art into the Curriculum with Sigrid Hice, who has more than fifteen years experience of creating artist books, writing poetry, essays, and children’s stories, Sigrid brought the skills of an artist and published author to the classroom. Sigrid grew up in West Germany and has lived in Hickory, NC, for over 40 years. She has taught numerous artist-book workshops to people of all ages. As a visiting artist-in-schools, she integrates bookmaking and creative writing. Sigrid is a roster member of the Mountain Arts Program, the South Carolina Alliance for Art Education, the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, a member of the Blowing Rock (NC) Historical Society, and a visiting artist at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

 
   

November 15, 2016 - Lora Drum, Curriculum Specialist, presented College and Career Ready English Language Learners: Exploring the Challenges, Strengths, and Strategies designed specifically for English Language Learner teachers.  Participants dug into how to make the ELA standards come alive in their classes and “construct” ways to keep the students engaged in learning.  Participants received ideas, strategies, and activities to add to their “toolbox.”

 
   

November 17, 2016 - Dee Hanlin, NWRESA Math Consultant presented Math I for Struggling Learners to Math I  and Math EC teachers. This training assisted teachers to make connections to the middle grades curriculum  in order to utilize the strategies students already know and extending those to NC Math I concepts. Ms. Hanlin focused on struggling learners who often need concrete and visual experiences to develop understanding as they move seamlessly between linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and creating equations. Teachers examined patterns and pedagogy that promote teaching for understanding and retention, including the addition of formal notation for recusive forms of sequences to NC Math 1 (NC.M1.F-BF.2)

 
   

December 1, 2016 - Lora Drum, Curriculum Specialist, presented Reading Instruction Within the Content. Dr. Drum says that research shows that teacher integration of literacy based instructional strategies facilitates student learning across all content areas. Using content-specific information, it is through literacy skills that students acquire and retain content knowledge and abilities.  A multitude of practical literacy strategies and ways to weave these into daily content area instruction were shared.

 

Fall Fitness Challenge

Dr. Sinclair recently invited superintendents to participate in the NWRESA Superintendent’s Council Fall Fitness Challenge.  The challenge began Saturday, October 1, 2016, for the most steps walked between October 1st and December 1st, 2016. Participants used a pedometer or other tech device to record their steps each day. Totals were tabulated  each week. Dr. Sinclair personally purchased trophies for the top three winners. The trophies (gold, silver, and bronze) were awarded at the December 14, 2016, meeting. In addition, to awarding the trophies, Dr. Sinclair provided medals to those who walked 500,000 steps by the end of the day on Thursday, December 1. Phyllis Yates, Ashe County Superintendent, was awarded 1st place, Dr. Larry Putnam, Burke County Superintendent, received 2nd place, and Chad Beasley, Alleghany County Superintendent, received the 3rd place honors. Those receiving a medal for achieving the 500,000 step total were Dr. Robbie Adell (Hickory City Superintendent), Dr. Scott Elliott (Watauga County Superintendent), Dr. David Stegall (Newton-Conover Superintendent), and Mark Byrd (not pictured), Wilkes County Superintendent. A winter fitness challenge will begin in January. Congratulations to all participants!

March 7-8, 2017 - Wendy Sellers, author of Puberty the Wonder Years,  presented this informative workshop to School counselors and nurses. Ms. Sellers is a Certified Prevention Consultant, Legislative Committee Chair for the Michigan Coordinated School Health Association, and was named School Health Coordinator of the Year by the American School Health Association in 2014. She was assisted by Pat Bednarz, a  school nurse for 26 years, project co-coordinator for a school-based HIV/STD and pregnancy prevention state and federally funded grant award, and the co-chair for an urban school district’s sex education advisory board. Topics discussed were:

Understanding Trauma - March 21 and Depression/Anxiety - March 28, 2017

 
March 21, 2017 - Heather M. Leslie, MA, a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist Associate in North Carolina presented two workshops on March 21 (Trauma) and March 28 (Depression/Anxiety). She has served in numerous roles involving child and adolescent populations, both within a residential, community, and home based setting. She currently provides clinical assessments for individuals of all ages who suffer with emotional and behavioral issues and serves as an adjunct professor at a local community college.

A broad discussion was presented to participants about understanding trauma. Trauma is a common experience that many young people may encounter during adolescence. What may be traumatizing to one, can have the complete opposite effect on another. The impact of trauma can be subtle, insidious, or outright destructive. How an event affects an individual depends on many factors, including characteristics of that individual, the type and characteristics of the event(s), developmental processes, the meaning of the trauma, and sociocultural factors. During the years of adolescence, these past and present experiences shape us into individuals.

There are many life experiences that may hinder one from fully developing in multiple facets. Traumatic situations can vary for each of us, examples include periods of homelessness, times when basic needs haven’t been met, separations from primary caregivers, witnessing or being a part of a natural disaster/terrorism/war, severe bullying, emotional/sexual/physical maltreatment or abuse, witnessing or being a part of incarceration of self or of caretakers, and many others events. The support and understanding to these experiences for our youth can be limited based on lack of understanding.

As educators and professionals, it important that we have the awareness to ask certain questions, provide empathetic support to the best of our ability, and to direct and encourage our youth toward helpful and useful interventions available to them. This topic discussion is intended to prepare you for appropriate interaction and questioning to determine if our youth are dealing with unresolved grief and/or trauma in their lives, as well as what to say, what to do, and how to provide support to them.

Depression and Anxiety can affect anyone. While the signs for each can range from obvious to discreet, it is important to know how to recognize symptoms. Adolescents go through a range of emotions and feelings throughout the day and there are different circumstances that can affect their behavior. Adolescent years are a time for development of identity and sense of self. Depressive symptoms can surface in adolescents and be difficult to distinguish from daily turmoil to actual depressive illness, so it is important to be aware of signs and symptoms in order to better gauge what is going on.  

As educators, we are familiar with “text anxiety” and being able to prepare students for what to expect in regards to certain areas and situations; however, this isn’t always possible.  Anxiety can easily be disguised on the outside, just as depression, while internally our youth are deeply struggling and unable to cope. This topic discussion is geared towards recognizing signs and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety that appear regularly in our youth and how to address them.

 
   
January 24-27, 2017 - Amy Jo Spencer, Senior Literacy Specialist for NCCAT, presented Reading, Writing, and Ready by 3rd Grade: Early Grades Literacy  Instruction (K-1) to K-1 Teachers and Instructional Coaches/Specialists.  Literacy instruction is as difficult as it is essential. This program will provide early grades teachers with a complement of research-based tools and strategies to help answer some of their more burning questions: How do I teach close reading to students who don’t yet know the alphabet? What level of writing can I attain from children who are still learning to spell? How do I simultaneously provide enrichment for advanced readers and remediation for delayed readers? How can I integrate reading and writing instruction into all other subject areas? Finally, what does this instruction look like in the classroom and how are student engagement and learning measured in this process?

Ms. Spencer presented an additional Reading, Writing, and Ready by 3rd Grade: Early Grades Literacy Instruction (Gr.2-3) on January 26-27, 2017 for teachers in Grades 2-3.
 

 
   
March 15, 2017 - Kristi Day (K-5 ELA) and Stacy Miller (NCDPI new secondary consultant) presented Aligning Instruction in the English Language Arts Classroom to K-12 ELA Coaches, Instructional Leaders, and Teachers. Ms Day, an NCDPI ELA consultant demonstrated how to learn about a coaching tool that helps teachers, and those who support teachers, build understanding and experience with ELA Standards-aligned instruction. This developmental tool can be used for planning, reflection, and collaboration. Developed by the Student Achievement Partners, the Instructional Practice Guides provide a framework for guided discussion about aligned instructional practices for ELA. Along with gaining strategies and resources, participants will complete activities and have discussions around each core action of the Guide.  
   
February 23, 2017 - Ready, Set, EOG Time! - Dr. Lora Drum, Elementary Curriculum Specialist assisted Teachers grades 3- 6 to explore ways to review while keeping students engaged before testing season strikes.  Specifically examined were ways to roadmap a plan for reviewing Reading standards while using resources that do not require the use of traditional pre-packed “test prep” materials.  This workshop was specifically designed for classroom teachers teaching reading in grades 3 – 6.
